Holiday travels can often be hectic, especially with kids in tow. This year, my children and I opted for train travel to visit our family, and it turned out to be a delightful and stress-free experience. Here’s why we’re now avid advocates of riding the rails for our holiday journeys.

1. Flexible Itineraries with Overnight Stops

Train travel offers us the flexibility to make stops and visit different subsets of our family along the way. This unique aspect turns our journey into a multi-destination adventure, allowing us to spread the holiday cheer with more relatives.

2. The Ease and Simplicity of Train Travel

One of the most appealing aspects of train travel is its simplicity. There’s no tedious wait in line for security checks; It’s just a matter of arriving at the station and hopping on the train. This ease greatly reduces the stress typically associated with holiday travel, especially when managing the dynamics of traveling with children.

3. Exceptional Service from Amtrak Staff

Traveling alone with kids can be challenging, but Amtrak’s staff consistently goes above and beyond to assist. Their helpful and friendly service ensures a smooth and comfortable journey for both the kids and me, making all the difference in our travel experience. They’re quick to help with bags, find us the best seats together, and just are generally kind and caring, which has never been my airport experience!

4. Freedom and Fun Onboard

Trains offer a level of freedom that you simply can’t find in cars or planes. My kids love the ability to move around, and we often find ourselves in the cafe car, playing board games and enjoying the changing scenery. This mobility and space to play make the journey an integral and enjoyable part of our holiday experience.

5. Comparing Travel Times: Train vs. Car

On our most recent trip, a friend questioned the logic behind a 7-hour train ride for what could be a 5-hour drive. However, when factoring in the need for stops with kids, dealing with unpredictable traffic (especially around DC!), and the general stress of driving, the time saved is minimal. This most recent trip, I also got to take a nap and enjoy a beer onboard–two luxuries I definitely can’t indulge in while driving, making the train a clear winner for me.

6. The Joy of a Relaxed Journey

The train journey allows us to start our holiday in a relaxed state, something rarely achievable with other modes of transport. It’s not just about getting from point A to B; it’s about enjoying the journey, spending quality time together, and making memories.

Choosing train travel for our holiday visits has transformed our experience from a stressful to a joyful one. It offers a unique combination of convenience, flexibility, and comfort, making it an excellent choice for family travel. The journey becomes part of the holiday celebration itself, filled with games, relaxation, and scenic views.

So, to other parents contemplating holiday travel plans, consider the train. It’s not just a means to an end, but a wonderful way to travel, bond, and create lasting holiday memories with your children. Happy travels! 🚂🎄✨
