As a family travel designer, I’m often asked where I’m heading next. My travels are varied, but here are a few of my own travel bucket list items.
1. The Azores: Nature’s Playground
The Azores, an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a paradise for nature lovers. With its stunning landscapes, volcanic craters, and lush green valleys, the Azores offer endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. My kids love all things volcanoes and lava, so this is a perfect destination for them.
Why It’s Great for Families:
- Outdoor Activities: Families can enjoy whale watching, hiking, and exploring lava tubes. Kids will love the natural swimming pools and the chance to see dolphins up close.
- Cultural Experiences: The Azores have a rich cultural heritage with charming villages, festivals, and local cuisine that provide an immersive experience.
- Educational Opportunities: The islands’ unique geology and biodiversity offer a hands-on learning experience about nature and conservation.
2. Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, Mexico: A Natural Wonder
I’m lucky to live along the monarch migration path, and the kids and I have planted tons of milkweed in our yard. We LOVE watching the caterpillars grow and the butterflies fly off each year. Ever since we started, we’ve been talking about visiting the butterfly sanctuary. The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico is a magical place where millions of Monarch butterflies migrate each year.
Why It’s Great for Families:
- Spectacular Sight: The sheer number of butterflies is breathtaking and creates a sense of wonder for children and adults alike.
- Eco-Tourism: Families can learn about the importance of conservation and the lifecycle of Monarch butterflies.
- Outdoor Adventures: The sanctuary is located in a beautiful forested area perfect for hiking and exploring.
3. Alaska Cruise and Rail: The Ultimate Adventure
I kept going back and forth about whether I’d rather do a cruise or rail vacation in Alaska. The real answer is both. Combining a cruise and rail journey into a long, one in a lifetime adventure through Alaska offers the best of both worlds: breathtaking coastal scenery and the rugged beauty of the interior.
Why It’s Great for Families:
- Varied Itineraries: Cruises provide a mix of on-board entertainment and shore excursions, while the rail journey offers stunning views and access to remote areas.
- Wildlife Encounters: Families can see whales, bears, moose, and other wildlife in their natural habitats.
- Interactive Learning: Kids can learn about glaciers, indigenous cultures, and the unique ecosystems of Alaska.
4. Hotel Xcaret Mexico: A Family-Friendly All-Inclusive Resort
Hotel Xcaret in Riviera Maya, Mexico, is an all-inclusive resort unlike any other. It celebrates the Mexican and Mayan cultures while creating a truly luxurious, no expense spared, no detail overlooked experience. The eco-parks are perfect for the adventure seekers in your family while the luxurious accommodations means that you’ll also have time to relax and unwind.
Why It’s Great for Families:
- On-Site Parks: Guests have access to several adventure parks offering activities like zip-lining, snorkeling, and exploring underground rivers.
- Cultural Immersion: The resort offers cultural shows, traditional cuisine, and workshops that allow families to learn about Mexican heritage.
- Luxurious Accommodations: Spacious suites, family-friendly amenities, and a variety of dining options ensure comfort and convenience.
