We recently spent a day in Grand Cayman during our cruise, and it was every bit as beautiful as I hoped. Since it’s a tender port, we had to take a small boat from the ship to the shore, which can sometimes mean waiting in lines or getting tickets. But instead of rushing off the ship first thing, we took a more laid-back approach since we didn’t have any excursions booked. We had a slow breakfast and waited until we could hop on the next tender without the fuss of tickets or long lines—always the right move to get the kids fed and avoid crowded lines when possible!
Once we were onshore, it was an easy transition. Cab drivers were lined up right outside the port, making it a breeze to get a ride over to Seven Mile Beach. We didn’t have any excursions booked, which allowed us to just go with the flow. And wow, did that beach deliver. The water was the kind of blue that you dream about—crystal clear, warm, and inviting, with little fish darting around us. I could have stayed there forever, soaking in the sun and watching the waves roll in.
Things were going great until Xan’s goggles, which I’d bought at the beach, started letting in water. I’d forgotten his good ones back on the ship and made a last-minute purchase that didn’t hold up. It was one of those moments where you’re trying to make it work, but sometimes, kids just have a limit, and it’s not worth pushing past it. Rather than forcing a fun beach day, we decided it was best to head back when it was clear Xan was done. (Plus, I enjoy spending some time on the ship while everyone is out exploring–it’s a different, quiet vibe that is always a treat.)
We made our way back to the port and grabbed a snow cone—a small treat that did wonders for our spirits. I also managed to pick up some Ritz cheese crackers at one of the shops, which scored me some quick mom points with the kids. Even though our beach time was cut short, we still enjoyed being on the island. The locals were incredibly kind, and the whole vibe was just easygoing and welcoming.
We’re heading back to Grand Cayman in a month on the Celebrity Beyond, and I’m already excited to have another go—this time with better goggles and plenty of snacks so we can make the most of the beach. The day didn’t go perfectly, but it was a good reminder that travel, especially with kids, is about embracing the moment, adjusting when things don’t go as planned, and always looking forward to the next adventure. I can’t wait to return, better prepared and ready to enjoy every second!
